Ursprünglich besetzt war das Concerto grosso italienischer Prägung nur mit Streichinstrumenten
In Deutschland kamen später auch Bläser hinzu.
Typisch für die Form ist, daß ein kleiner Klangkörper, oft in Triosonaten-Besetzung (Concertino) dem Orchester-Tutti (Concerto grosso) gegenübersteht.
Ende des 18. Jh. verschwand das Concerto grosso als Form zugunsten des symphonischen Konzerts.
